ABOUT THE BOOK
Family man and police officer Howard Hamilton happily works the quiet night shift in the Orchard Hills community of California. One evening, he is in a situation where he might have used his firearm but froze, which is when he starts to question his qualifications as a Police Officer. Then, the unthinkable happens: a rookie officer is killed.
When the department struggles with their first on-duty death in ten years, the new chief transfers HH to day watch-where the bad luck really begins. Within days, another officer has a heart attack. Then, HH's good friend accidentally kills an officer while hunting. HH becomes unwittingly embroiled in a drug-dealing cop's arrest. The OHPD is in a state of duress!
While the department swirls in the windstorm of deaths, HH discovers the body of Ginny, sister to the largest business owner in town. She has been brutally slain in a ritualistic murder, which brings in LAPD's occult expert. HH wants nothing more than to return to the usual night shift and his family, but first, he has to work with his nemesis to unravel a horrendous crime in a city once lauded for its peace and quiet.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
i just finished reading Cowards, Crooks, and Warriors by J.C. DeLadurantey and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story was well-paced and seemed to speak with unfiltered authenticity; the author's own history obviously sustains the credibility throughout. It provides a great insight into the daily experience of a policeman, be he a patrol officer or assigned to the detective department. The characters are believable and likeable in their roles – particularly the main character. I found myself rooting for his success. Now that I’ve finished this story, I’m hoping to hear news of a sequel. Thanks for the great story!
Well done. Jack Shaughnessy
I normally do not read cop style stories however, after having people recommend this book to me I got it and loved it. Reading it made the everyday cop and his life come alive. Especially with today's problems in law enforcement played out in the media, this story gives everyone a good perspective of what their lives entail. The characters seem so real and you can visualize them as you are reading the story. That is what good writing is all about. Anna Draper
It started with a clever title, designed to catch the eye of skilled surveillant, fulfilling in sharing the application of street smarts, keen interest holding web of situations that flow through the daily encounters of a guy 'on the job'. The author's view reflects he's been 'there' with humor rich in familiarity , smiles, bruises and soulful pain of things gone dead wrong! Anonymous
In knowing the author, I had anticipated a fascinating and exciting ride. I got that and much more--surprises, insights and moments of uncertainty . You'll not be disappointed with Joe D's approach in this excellent novel! Paul M. Whisenand, Ph.D
I am a mystery buff and this had me guessing till the end...this is one of those books you don't want to end...I loved the relationship between HH and his wife...and his colorful descriptions of the people and colleagues he comes into contact with...hope there is another book on the horizon...you can tell this author speaks from experience !!! Cindy...North Carolina
Gripping, real, scary, sick all at the same time. Loved characters and seeing what officers deal with personally and professionally. How do these heroes keep their lives in balance? Amazing read. Judy
A well written mystery novel written from the perspective of a patrol officer. The authors experience in patrol, detectives and forensics make for a thoroughly enjoyable read. Hard to put down. Larry Fetters
This first effort on J.C's part was a really great read. It made you see the inside workings of the police department of Orchard Hill. The protagonist, Harry, was a very real and interesting character. The plot went places you didn't imagine and things wrapped up very satisfactorily. I would certainly encourage another effort with Harry in the lead again. Patricia Fohl
For cops, the story will sound familiar however for non-law enforcement it will introduce them to a slice of what it realistically looks like to be a street cop. The author has done a terrific job in painting an environment in which one feels like the invisible person at the scene. This story follows the life of a uniformed street cop who is loaned to detectives for a special homicide case which is singularly unique. You can feel the anxiety of this cop as he struggles to meet the demands of his career and his family. Great read! Steve Day
